Should teenage girls wear make up to school before age 16?

I just went over to Yahoo! Answers to play. I like to visit and see what questions interest me and answer the ones that do.

Yesterday I saw one asking for help to apply eye liner make up, a category of the board I had never ventured into and remembered how hard it was to learn how to apply eyeliner in my teen years. I wrote out an answer and just as I was ending with 'Have fun', there was a surge in the power and my computer went out. Lost!!!

So a bit earlier, I went back over to see if I could find the question again but couldn't. What I did see were quite a few questions asking for help from young teenage girls or asking about what age is good to start wearing make up everyday.

My mother was strict. I couldn't wear makeup outside of the house until I was in Grade 11. I was allowed to practice putting it on at home before that though.

In addition, most schools here in Jamaica still require uniforms. Makeup is simply not an option for teenage girls going to school here.

So I was a bit surprised to see a question over at Yahoo asking if it was OK to wear make up everyday to school and seeing most of the answers saying yes.

Hmmmmmm...

Maybe I'm old school but I feel teenage girls need to concentrate on learning at school. I realise the U.S. is very different from Jamaica but I still feel limits are fine. There are so many aspects to beauty other than what we see in magazines and on TV and like you probably do, I tend to stress inner beauty first.

Self worth has become such an important issue throughout our world that I feel it warrants us going back a bit to basics. My mother taught me that it was my inner qualities that were lasting and important and that outer beauty and knowing how to put myself together well was wonderful but not the more important of the two.

I think teaching our children how to create lives that express peace, harmony, giving, gratitude, love, compassion, wholeness, tolerance and wisdom everyday will go a much farther way to expanding that throughout the world. Then as older teens and young women, our daughters will wear make up that only highlights their natural outer beauty and reflects their fully developed inner beauty as well.

I responded to the question by that young school girl by suggesting that she wait until sixteen to start wearing a bit of eyeliner and a light lip gloss. I also suggested that she could in the meantime practice taking care of her skin by getting an excellent skin care system with cleanser, toner and moisturiser, as good skin is always the key foundation of outer facial beauty.

What do you think? Do young girls have enough pressure to grow up from the ads on TV, society in general and their peers? Is the rest of their life too short to wait until 16 to start wearing make up everyday?

My daugher is now 8 and we've already discussed that piercing of her ears and wearing makeup will wait until she's 16. My sister, who lives in the U.S. and who also has an eight year old daughter is also grooming her to wait for certain things until shes sixteen.

Pray that we both maintain our sanity, continued friendship and harmonious agreement on limits with our daughters as they reach their teenage years!!! ;-

3. The maintenance - our kids need to know maintenance most especially to the leather goods including the belts, shoes, wallets and bags.

4. To know difference on raw materials, including the various quality of the leather. Kids needs to know the unprocessed leather, when your buying a low quality like many cheap versions it will also mean low quality but then purchasing a higher quality version will require maintenance. This type of leather should not be utilized daily because its prone to stains of water then an increase exposure on sunlight leads to their darkening.

There are several types of lighting you can use to enhance your home theatre experience. If you set up a counter/bar area (or for the purposes of this article a concession stand) you can use a couple of pendant lights on a separate switch, so at intermission, people can see what they are eating and drinking. Sconces spaced along the walls will add that theatrical touch. Cinema Shop (www.cinemashop.com) has wall sconces with movie themes, as well as other lighting, that is functional while enhancing the dcor.

Movie posters can be found at many sites on the internet. You may be able to get some for free at your local movie theatre; ask if they have any they are going to throw away. Poster frames can also be found on the internet, at very reasonable prices. Frames-Direct (www.frames-direct.com) has a large selection to choose from.

You can also find movie reels at online auction sites that you can either hang on the walls with your posters, or use them to make other home theatre accessories. For example, a couple put together can become a wine rack; one laid down on a coffee table or counter area could hold small bowls of nuts, candy or dip. Several of the websites listed have signs, lighted and unlighted, that you can personalize for your theatre or place in your concession advertising your favorite drink. To really bring the drama home, you can put up velvet drapes on either side of the television.

If you do need furniture, many stores and warehouse clubs offer theatre seating. Cinema Shop, amongst all the other items it carries, also offers theatre seats, as well as cinema loungers. La-Z-Boy (www.la-z-boy.com) offers a line called Matinee, which has a wealth of choices in fabric and leather. From Home Theater Mart (www.htmart.com) you can find studio chairs, which are the height of a bar stool, for your concession/bar area. These chairs can also be used as extra seating, and can be folded up and stored when not in use. There are coffee tables, side tables and DVD storage shelves that have a movie reel look to them.

You can also find those little finishing touches at many of the businesses listed in this article, such as pillows, throws and area rugs keeping with the home theatre theme. The possibilities are endless.

Finally, pop some popcorn, pour yourself a soda and get comfortable - its show time!

A person could purchase towels that coordinate or contrast with the color of the walls to enhance the appearance of the room.

Repainting or retiling the bathroom could be expensive.

There are many ways to prevent water from spilling all over the bathroom floor. Instead of having a glass shower door made of glass, replace it with a shower curtain and pole.

Guests who visit the home will use the bathroom. Consider using safety handles that are useful for both for the owner of the house and any visitors to prevent accidents.

A bathroom doesnt have to be extravagant for people to appreciate it. By working with the space and resources available, it can be decorated to be both elegant and beautiful.

I have twin 3 year old girls so this year I bought them these costumes. I took them to the local Ren Fest and recieved so many comments about how beautiful the outfits for the girls where. Not only did these dresses hold out all day at the festival but they wore them for Halloween as well. The dresses also come with shirt clips that worked well because one of girls is about 2" shorter then her sister so I was able to pin up the dress to fit perfectly. Overall these were a big hit.

Jen and I have been to home decor store after home decor store looking for something unique. Wherever we go it's the same accessories, the same furniture just dressed up a different way. No character, no style, no real identity. How can you as a consumer avoid the trap of the cookie cutter home decor emporium?

1) Stay away from the mall! Mall rents are a bit higher, so the chains can buy space but the average small business person is usually left on the outside looking in.

2) Bigger is not always better. If you want your home to look like everyone else's, go to a big store and buy what everyone else is buying. The only exception to the big store rule is Hobby Lobby, in my opinion, they bring unique items in all the time and the prices are unbeatable.

3) Look downtown and not just in the big city. Our smaller towns and villages are great sources for little hole in the wall home decor stores. Take a place like McKinney, TX, for example. McKinney's downtown square is an awesome source of home decor and specialty stores. Lee's Summit, MO is another fine example of a downtown square with several decor stores.

4) Don't be afraid to travel a little. Grab a couple friends, jump in the SUV and make a day trip of it. Nell Hills in Atchison, KS is one of the premier home decor destinations in the Great Plains. 95% of their customers come from over 50 miles away. If you're in St. Louis, Kansas City, Omaha, Sioux Falls, Wichita, Lincoln, or Des Moines, consider a day trip to Nell Hills.

• What situations may arise that will make it necessary for your teenager to have passengers in the car? You may find it convenient for your teenager to pick up or drop off other family members at school or for other activities. If you and the other adults in your home work outside the home, it may help the family to have another driver to help with this. Another issue here is when your teen wants to drive other teens to a party or other type of social function. You may need to consult with the parents of the others teens before making any decisions.
• How is your teen adapting to the responsibility associated with being a licensed driver? Many teens are very responsible and follow the rules you have given them. • How long should your teen be driving before you make changes to the ground rules? Many parents give their teenager a six month trial period to decide how everything is going. Take a look at how your teen is behaving since they began to drive. Has the behavior changed in a positive or negative way? Discuss all of this as a family. Allow your teen to give input into this decision making process.

Spring is here and for many of us it's the perfect time to organize and decorate. As winter passes into spring, it's out with the old look and in with the new look. This is a great time to bring some new ideas into your home and liven things up!

Spring is a great time to find bargains on decorating accessories at yard and garage sales. As the seasons change, many times your local thrift and consignment stores will have a change in inventory. This is the time when many folks finally donate unwanted merchandise that's just been sitting around the garage or house. Spring cleaning!

My advise..have your own yard or garage sale and make some extra money on those items. But, lucky for us frugal shoppers, there are some folks who just don't want to take the time. So, be sure not to miss out on decorating supplies, furnishings, accessories, paint, wallpaper, and fabrics that can be found at many thrift stores.

Sometimes pulling items from one room to another and simply re-organizing, fixing up, or just using an item in a different way can be enough. Add a fresh coat of paint, different window dressings and replacement of furnishings, and WHA LAH! You have a new room.

Need some paint? If you can be flexible about color, check the mis-mixed table at your local home improvement, hardware, or paint stores. You can find high quality paints for a fraction of the original retail cost when colors don't turn out exactly as they should have. Sometimes you can find a slight variation of just the color you've already picked that will work just as well with your selected color scheme and save you lots of money.

I buy these mis-mixed paints (usually for $2-3 per gallon or less) throughout the year and store them appropriately for later use. This way I go shopping in my own paint department first to see if I can accommodate the decorating plan I have chosen. Planning ahead and grabbing these types of decorating supplies when they're a bargain is a great way to maximize your savings.

Collecting fabrics for future use is also another great idea. Even unwanted clothing can be used to create small window dressings, pillow covers, and accessories. Many people give away scraps of fabrics or sell them at yard sales. Be sure to check clearance and end piece items at sewing and fabric shops. It's really so simple to make a curtain or a pillow. Usually only requires sewing simple seams.

For more complicated tasks, if you can't figure it out for yourself, you're sure to find a how to book at any library or search on-line for free information.

I've found some excellent ideas for decorating on a budget, do-it-yourself projects, and some great decorating theme ideas from HGTV (Home and Garden Television). Even if you don't get this wonderful T.V. channel in your home, you can go on-line at HGTV.com to benefit from some wonderful ideas and projects by professionals. There's a lot for do-it-yourselfers here! You can get some great ideas for areas of your home where you just don't know what to do with it.

Before you make your plans, check out several books at the library on home decorating. You will find no shortage of books on this subject. Glance through them and grab ideas to incorporate into your own decorating task. If you have a specific challenge to overcome, likelihood is someone else has already encountered it, conquered it, and written a book or web page about it. Use their knowledge! It will save you time and frustration of figuring it out.

There is an old Chinese proverb: "Tell me, I forget. Show me, I remember. Involve me, I understand." Kids are often visual and kinesthetic learners. Talking at them, or even with them, is usually not nearly as effective as getting them involved in something concrete, before going to the abstract.

In conducting a counseling program for adolescents, I hear an unfortunate number of them talk about their lives as if they are over. This girl feels like a failure because she doesn't have a boyfriend. That boy is drinking and using heavily. Those over there are running with a tagging crew or a gang. Some cannot imagine living to age 25.

Because so many kids are stronger in visual and kinesthetic intelligences than in verbal or mathematical, I find it is much easier to connect with them and to get an idea across if they can see it and experience it, than if they just hear it. In group or individually, I ask them, "Who is the oldest person in your family?" or "How old was your grandpa when he died?" The answer usually is around 75.

I get out two yardsticks and lay them end to end, saying, "Let's imagine each inch represents one year. How many years do we have here? Right - 72 - so if your grandpa was 75, he lived longer than the length of these two yardsticks. Let's see - you are 14 (or whatever their age is). So that's right here on the measure. Hmm, just over one foot, and there are six feet here, so you are only about 1/6 the age of your grandpa. You know that longevity tends to run in the family, so it looks like you have a long way to go ... unless you get hit by a car or a bullet or get really sick or something. Did you ever ask grandpa what his life was like at 14, whether he had any idea how long he'd be around or what kinds of things might happen in his life?"

Just going this far with the activity can have a big impact. I have seen that proverbial light go on, when they actually see the length of their lives laid out on that simple yardstick.

From there, we often go to another activity, a timeline. First, I draw a sample on the board or a sheet of paper, to give them the general idea of the project. Working independently, they draw a horizontal line across the middle of a sheet of paper, at least 8.5x14 or larger. The left end is their birth and the right end is the present. Then they add perpendicular lines above and below the timeline. Lines going up are for positive experiences, and down are for negative ones. A shorter line indicates a small good or bad event, while a longer line means something much more extreme in either direction. Each of these lines is labeled to show what it represents: starting kindergarten, getting a pet, sister's birth, going to the hospital, moving to a different school, etc. If desired, kids can use drawings in addition to or instead of words to identify each event. These timelines are then shared with the group, with each person describing as much (or as little) as is comfortable. They discover commonalities, as well as differences in perspective. For example, "dad left" could be a huge negative for one person, but a positive for another.

The following session, I return their papers. Now they are instructed either to work on the back or on a new sheet, and draw another timeline, this one starting with the present and projecting into the future, to the age of the oldest person in their family. (NOTE: This is an important instruction, because otherwise, some will show their life ending at age 21 or so. Another extension of this activity is to discuss what choices or chances could lead them to live a longer or shorter time.) Again, they fill in the markers of what they anticipate will be the high and low points, if they were to live to that age. This, of course, is more difficult for some than for others, and leads to discussions about having dreams, goals, and anticipations.

A natural follow up is a series of activities on goal setting and steps to achieve goals. Another follow-up is a series I created called "I Have a Dream, Too." This pamphlet of activities helps them identify dreams, goals, and how to get there.

Adolescents are generally eager learners when the subject is "Me." The yardstick, timeline and other such activities actively engage even the most reluctant kid into some self-exploration.

Approachability matters. A smile shows a man that you're friendly, that you're willing to acknowledge him, and that he won't have to fear getting rejected when he approaches you.
